Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday objected to a proposal by the U.S. Air Force that would transfer a Florida Air National Guard squadron to the U.S. Space Force.

Florida is frequently hit with heavy flooding during hurricane season, and national guard members are critical in dealing with the recovery process following natural disasters.

DeSantis reactivated the Florida State Guard recently, and that has been used (along with National Guard troops) for deployments to the Mexican border, a concern that is far removed from hurricane weather. He has also complained about how vaccine mandates affected readiness for the National Guard.

DeSantis says the move would jeopardize Florida’s hurricane response, and that the federal government has “under-resourced” the Florida National Guard.
