Republican senators from Alaska and several other states cricisized the administration's widely anticipated decisions.

The administration has blocked a proposed industrial road needed to mine copper in the middle of the state, and has banned oil drilling on 13 million acres in the North Slope.

The Biden administration released its final plan Friday to prevent or limit oil and gas development across more than half of Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve, which it said will protect caribou, polar bears and other Arctic wildlife while preserving the way of life of indigenous communities.
