Israel and Iran have struck at one another again a week into their war as President Donald Trump weighs U.S. involvement and new diplomatic efforts appear to be taking place.

The current conflict began on June 13, at a bad time for the international institutions that were established to try to contain such hostilities. Israel’s war in Gaza, which began after Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, attack, has killed more than 50,000 people and caused widespread destruction and hunger in Gaza.

Israel and Iran exchanged missile barrages for a third straight day Sunday. A human rights group says Israel’s strikes have killed at least 406 people in Iran, while the death toll in Israel rose overnight to 13.
