The Hawaii Supreme Court will be asked to weigh in on an issue that threatens to thwart a $4 billion settlement in last year’s devastating Maui wildfires.

The more than $4-Billion settlement over the Maui wildfires is headed to the Hawai'i Supreme Court after Judge Peter Cahill ruled in favor of the submission on Friday.

Maui Circuit Court Judge Peter Cahill on Friday said he will ask the Hawaii Supreme Court to weigh in on key questions related to a proposed, $4 billion settlement of hundreds of lawsuits related to 2023’s Maui wildfires.

The parties that have agreed to terms of the proposed settlement with wildfire survivors include Hawaiian Electric and its parent company, Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI), the State of Hawaiʻi, the County of Maui, Kamehameha Schools, West Maui Land Co., Hawaiian Telcom and Spectrum/Charter Communications.
