May's massive geomagnetic storm caused changes in Earth's upper artmosphere. Solar activity is predicted to enhance the visibility of northern lights for two years.

A CME or coronal mass ejection - an eruption of material from the surface of the sun - happened on Sunday and should reach the Earth by Tuesday. Any ensuing Northern Lights could linger from Tuesday into Wednesday, scientists from the NOAA and National Weather Service said.

The forecasts for the northern lights on Wednesday and Thursday are nearly identical and show some northern U.S. states may be able to catch a glimpse.

Parts of the UK may get a display of the Northern Lights this week as an ejection of material from the Sun gives a 'glancing blow' to Earth's atmosphere. The Met Office's Space Weather forecast says there could be signs of Aurora Borealis on Tuesday and Wednesday night.
