Find the dark and hoard your wishes, my babies — the annual Perseid meteor shower is upon us. Among the finest sky shows in our solar system, the Perseids will be visible throughout the US and most of the Northern Hemisphere in the days to come.

Dubbed the "best meteor shower of the year" by NASA, the Perseids are about to appear over Australia tonight - here's how to catch a glimpse.

Between July 18 and Aug. 12, you can see the Southern Delta Aquariids shower in the Northern Hemisphere by looking to the south. Under dark skies, the shower can have a maximum hourly rate of 15-20 meteors. It occurs at the beginning of the Perseids. Unable to view our graphics? Click here to see them.

Skygazers have a lot to look forward to over the next month. A couple of dueling meteor showers will grace the skies later in July, and they will be joined by perhaps the most popular meteor shower of the year. Perseids are known for their bright fireballs and plentiful meteors. The show starts on Thursday, July 17, and will run through Aug. 23.

Southern Delta Aquariids: This meteor shower typically peaks in late July and produces "between 10 and 20 meteors per hour around this (the peak)," according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. "A truly dark sky offers the best chance of seeing the Delta Aquariids, as they tend not to be as bright as some of the other meteor showers."
