An American who spent three years behind bars in Russia before being released in a prisoner exchange has been convicted in absentia for fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine

Stephen Hubbard, 72, is the first U.S. citizen known to have been convicted for fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine.

Trevor Reed was sentenced in absentia by a Russian court to 14-and-a-half years in prison. He was injured fighting in Ukraine in 2023.
