Track the winter storm as it's forecasted to bring heavy snow and extremely cold weather to the U.S., reaching millions from the southern U.S. to the Northeast.

Half the U.S. population will likely see some effect from the sprawling storm that will move across the country this weekend, meteorologists said.

The pileup in Michigan is the latest impact of the major winter storm moving across the U.S. More than 200 million people are in the path of the arctic blasts.

A major, widespread winter storm will hammer parts of the South, Midwest and Northeast Friday through Monday with potentially damaging ice and heavy snow for millions from New Mexico and Texas to parts of New England.
