Nov 29, 2020 · Overrated, or not? I think Gena Rowlands's presence in many of them is what made them strong (A Woman Under the Influence, Opening Night)—she carried those films on her back. I've always sort of thought that Cassavetes' style was basically melodrama at its core, dressed up in a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants grit.

They lost to Francis Ford Coppola for THE GODFATHER PART II and Ellen Burstyn in ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE. He also directed her in her other Oscar-nominated role, GLORIA.

Aug 15, 2024 · Years ago, we visited Westwood Memorial Park, where Cassavetes is buried (alongside his mother-in-law Lady Rowlands). It’s a beautiful, quiet place and so many artistic collaborators are there close to one another (e.g. Jack Lemon, Billy Wilder and Marilyn Monroe).
