    During the 18th century, up until the American Revolution, the basic architectural style (or more accurately 'styles') used in the English colonies in America was labelled Georgian, after the three English Monarchs George I, II, and III.
    American colonial architecture includes several building design styles associated with the colonial period of the United States, including First Period English (late-medieval), Spanish Colonial, French Colonial, Dutch Colonial, and Georgian.
    As the country grew, these early settlers developed not one, but many, uniquely American styles. Centuries later, builders borrowed ideas from early American architecture to create Colonial Revival and Neocolonial styles. The first British settlers in New England built timber-frame dwellings similar to the ones they had known in their home country.
    During the 18th century, the "common houses" were whitewashed in lime mortar with an oyster shell aggregate. Typically two-story, the houses included cooling porches to accommodate the Florida climate. The style developed in the Southwest with Pueblo design influences from the indigenous Puebloan peoples architecture.
