    The Persian Gulf War, also known as Operation Desert Storm or the First Gulf War, began in 1991. It started after President Saddam Hussein of Iraq ordered the invasion and occupation of neighboring Kuwait in early August 1990 (Department of Defense).
    An estimated 8,000 to 10,000 Iraqi forces were killed in the Gulf War, while only 300 coalition troops were killed. Though the Gulf War was recognized as a decisive victory for the coalition, Kuwait and Iraq suffered enormous damage, and Saddam Hussein was not forced from power.
    Over the following months the U.S. military carried out its largest overseas deployment since World War II. By mid-November the U.S. had more than 240,000 troops in the Gulf and another 200,000 on the way, and the United Kingdom had sent more than 25,000, Egypt 20,000, and France 5,500.
