      When the first World War began Latvia, like the rest of the Russian Empire, prepared by mobilizing, with 20000-25000 Latvian soldiers sent to the Eastern Front at the beginning of the war. Thousands of these soldiers were killed when the Germans defeated the Russian army at the battle of Masurian Lakes in early 1915.

      At the beginning of World War I, general mobilization occurred in Latvia. Those mobilized were incorporated into the units operating in Eastern Prussia. These units were completely destroyed by the German army at the beginning of 1915 in Germany and Poland. Many thousands of soldiers – Latvian by nationality – perished or became prisoners of war .
      After the end of the First World War, some Latvian riflemen remained in Russia and fought in the Civil War on various sides of the front, some participated in the Freedom Fights in Latvia. In 1920, with the advent of peacetime, a large number of former riflemen who had spent the last five years at war returned to Latvia.
      Certain episodes of the Latvian Independence War were also part of the Polish-Soviet War, particularly the Battle of Daugavpils . On 18 November 1918 the People's Council of Latvia proclaimed the Independence of the Republic of Latvia and created the Latvian Provisional Government headed by Kārlis Ulmanis .
