      The memorial, built in 1866, is the oldest Civil War monument in Texas. A primary target for federal blockaders and a haven for blockade runners, this city survived enemy attacks to remain in Confederate control throughout the war.
      There were no new Confederate memorials erected in Texas during the 1970’s, 1980’s, and most of the 1990’s. The “Stonewall” Jackson monument erected in 1999 ended this drought. Since then, four additional monuments have been put up.

      The most influential group in early Confederate memorialization throughout the South was the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Forty-one of Texas’s Confederate monuments, half of the state’s total, were erected by the UDC. The UDC was formed in 1894 and their initial mission was to assist widows and orphans of Confederate soldiers.
